R. Sue Dodea contributed this photo of Justin Morrill College experimental education in action. She writes: "...During 1975-76, a select group of students created an independent study class to delve into literature during intensive, weekly off-campus sessions. Participants included (L-R in photo below) Kathy (Czar) Kukielka, R. Sue (Smith) Dodea; instructor Katherine McCracken; Rene Davis; and Catherine (Surname unknown). The evening session sites rotated. This photo was taken during a weekly session at the apartment of Kathy (Czar) Kukielka . Each participant chose a text which all read and discussed during the sessions. Kathy chose Jane Austin's "Pride and Prejudice"; R. Sue Dodea remembers reading "Howard's End" by E.F. Forester. She suspects that Rene Davis selected "Orlando" by Virginia Woolf. Each participant was also assigned a scholarly paper to complete by term's end. The Pass/Fail grade was based largely on class participation. The nimble minds at play boded no slack given to those who had not read or completed the assignment. To the best of our recollection, there was no occasion of slacking off. We took great delight in our purposeful discussions guided by the keen intelligence of Katherine McCracken. The group was a great success, which had more to do with the bright, lively minds at work than the cheap domestic wine that accompanied the sessions. As Forester concluded, "Only connect." "
Thanks, R. Sue!
